Apple Watch Series 4 Review
Series 4’s face is immediately noticeable. Apple removed the watch’s heavy bezels and pushed the screen to the edge.
Both Series 4 devices are somewhat bigger than their predecessors and have larger screens. That’s big. The 40mm model’s OLED screen is 394×324, whereas the 38mm Series 3’s is 340×272, and the 44mm model’s is 448×368. The smallest Series 4 screen is larger than the biggest Series 3’s. This facilitates communication.
Both the Series 3 and Series 4 watches can reach 1,000 nits, but Apple revamped the UI to take advantage of the larger screen. More detailed icons Quickly read alerts. During a 3-mile jog in full sunlight, I could view the five running stats without squinting. This makes the display appear brighter when it’s not.
Apple’s Series 4 watch faces take advantage of the large screen. The new faces were created by filming vapor, fire, water, and liquid metal at rapid speeds. On the Series 3, these dynamic faces are limited to the dial’s rim. In the Series 4, flames lick the display on one face and vapor rolls over your wrist like fog over the Golden Gate Bridge on the other.
My favorite new watch face is the Infograph Modular, which displays six items of data. I need weather, fitness mode, music, date, time, and battery percentage. I prefer to have my activity rings on my watch display so I can see how horribly I’m smashing my pals. (Ha! Mostly.) Another Infograph faces eight difficulties, which I feel are excessive. I like simplicity.
The Series 4 Apple Watch is a major upgrade. Apple gained FDA authorization for two game-changing features: an ECG app that can take electrocardiograms on the fly and an atrial fibrillation alarm. Any watch running watchOS 5 or later will support atrial fibrillation. The Series 4 ECG app uses electrodes in the sapphire crystal-and-ceramic back and Digital Crown to collect a readout.
Some cardiologists are concerned that the ECG app might send individuals to the hospital needlessly. Time and peer-reviewed data will tell. I’ve spoken to folks whose Apple Watches uncovered severe health concerns.
Receiving actionable information about your heart rate and rhythm is huge. People who would normally forgo checkups will benefit from having months of cardiac data in an app (or who seek out treatment only to be told that nothing is wrong).
The irregular heart rhythm function and ECG app didn’t debut with watchOS 5.1.2. The watch ECG was accurate when compared to a hospital 12-lead EKG. See our hands-on for more on the ECG app. I also triggered a low heart rate alarm (akin to watchOS 4’s high heart rate warning), but so far, so good.
Fall detection is another immediate health feature. I hope not. The Series 4’s upgraded accelerometer and gyroscope can detect whether you fall forward or backward and decide if you fell inadvertently. Trust falls won’t work. I didn’t fall when testing the watch, so I guess it works. (I’m not aiming to be hurt at work.)
Apple Watch performance has increased dramatically. Three years ago, the Series 0 relied on your iPhone and took forever to load. The Series 4’s fourth-generation S4 watch processor is lightning fast.
Instantaneous running start (not including the three-second countdown to prepare). Like on my iPhone, the Watch Mail app downloads emails in seconds. I opened Maps on a Series 3 with watchOS 5 and a Series 4 side-by-side. Series 3 came after Series 4.
Both versions are blazing fast compared to Wear OS and Snapdragon 2100 smartwatches. Apple still leads in smartwatch computing capability, despite the new Snapdragon 3100 CPU.
The Apple Watch has always featured Siri, but you had to push the sluggish Digital Crown or say “Hey Siri,” which is awkward in public. On the Series 4, lifting your wrist and speaking activates Siri. Finally, Talk.
A faster processor speeds the process (almost faster than on my iPhone). You can’t ask Siri anything too difficult. Raising my wrist to ask Siri for the weather or message my spouse is the type of quick and straightforward engagement I desire from a wristwatch.
The new watch’s louder speaker is evident. My Siri is British, and I about fell out of my chair when he answered a watch question.
Automatic workout recognition is helpful since I sometimes forget to stop a run or start a spinning cycle, resulting in erroneous statistics (or no data at all). After three minutes of running, my watch asked whether I wanted to start a workout. Then it credited me for three minutes and miles.
I adore Apple Podcasts’ and third-party applications’ offline podcast sync. Overcast syncs podcast episodes to my watch and notifies me which ones are only available on my phone if I interrupt a sync.
Only Apple Music lets you save songs offline on your watch. Spotify introduced a watch app in November that would allow offline music later. This might sell Apple Watches to Spotify users.
I assumed cellular would make the Apple Watch a must-have, but I always had my iPhone. I need it for too many things, including Instagram, which is hard to see on a watch.
Apple upgraded the Series 4’s cellular reception, so it works better outside of cities. The price of a new Apple Watch is now $399 or £399, while an LTE model starts at $499 or £399 (without a data contract). GPS is best.
The Apple Watch Series 4 lasts 24 hours, like previous models. Apple’s 18-hour battery life is certainly a day’s worth. That’s better than my iPhone, which I occasionally need to charge before going out, but it’s shorter than the Fitbit Versa and Samsung’s Galaxy Watch, which both last four days.
According to an iFixIt disassembly, Apple increased the Series 4 battery size. The new battery has somewhat more capacity than the 38mm Series 3, but it doesn’t last longer.
I wore the 40mm Series 4 for a 3-mile run one morning. By 6:45 p.m., after a day of mild app use, email checking, texting, and asking Siri questions, it was below 50%.
You can wear the watch to sleep if you use a third-party sleep-tracking software, but my ambition is for Apple to make its own app and enhance battery life so I can observe my sleep cycles without charging the watch every morning.
